Living with green: a practical guide to indoor plants

The plants that forgive you, the ones that do not, and how to tell which corner of your home suits each.

Plants make a room feel alive faster than any piece of furniture. They also die faster than any piece of furniture, usually from too much love. Here is how to choose well and keep them going.

Read your light first

Stand where the plant will live at noon. If you can read comfortably without a lamp, you have medium light. If the sun hits the floor, you have bright light. If you need a lamp, choose a plant that tolerates shade, or choose a different corner.

Start with the forgiving ones

  • Snake plant: survives low light and irregular watering.
  • Pothos: grows fast, tells you when it is thirsty by drooping.
  • ZZ plant: thrives on neglect, almost suspiciously so.

Water less than you think

Push a finger into the soil. If the first few centimeters are dry, water thoroughly until it drains. If not, wait. Most indoor plants are lost to soggy roots, not thirst.

Group them

Plants placed together create a small humid pocket that most of them love. A cluster of three in different heights also looks more intentional than a single pot on a shelf.
