Designing a desk you want to sit at

Light, height and the fewest possible things: a small guide to a better place to work.

You spend more waking hours at your desk than anywhere else in your home. It deserves the same care as the sofa.

  • Light from the side. A window to your left or right avoids glare on the screen and shadows on the page.
  • Screen at eye level. A stack of books works as well as any stand.
  • One object you love. A plant, a print, a good lamp. Just one.
  • Nothing else. Every item on the desk asks for a little attention. Keep only what you use daily.

Give it a week. You may find that the hardest part of starting work was never the work itself.
